Wing Divider
A two-legged compass tool used to scribe parallel guidelines, mark consistent distances from an edge, and lay out circles.
A wing divider looks like a drafting compass: two pointed legs joined at a pivot, with a curved bar (the "wing") and a thumbscrew that locks the spacing between the legs at a fixed distance. Once set, one leg rides along the edge of the leather while the other scratches a fine, consistent guideline parallel to it β exactly the kind of line needed to mark where a groove, crease, or row of stitching should go.
It's a simple tool, but a precise one, and it's hard to replace with anything else for certain jobs. A ruler can measure a distance at a few points, but only a wing divider can scribe a continuous, exactly parallel line along an edge that curves or changes direction.
How to use it
- Loosen the thumbscrew and set the leg spacing to your target distance, checking it against a ruler.
- Tighten the screw to lock the spacing so it doesn't drift mid-project.
- To mark a guideline: rest one point against the leather's edge and drag the tool along, letting the trailing point scratch a fine line at the fixed distance.
- To draw a circle: set the spacing to the desired radius, plant one point as the center, and rotate the other point around it.
- Keep light, steady pressure β you want a visible scratch line, not a deep gouge.
π‘ Tip
Use a wing divider to mark your groove or stitch line before reaching for a pricking iron or groover β a scratched guideline keeps the whole seam straight even where your hands naturally drift.
Care
There's little to maintain beyond keeping the pivot screw snug so the spacing doesn't creep during use, and keeping the points sharp enough to scratch a clean line rather than a ragged one. A light touch-up on a fine stone restores dulled points.
β οΈ Safety
Both legs end in sharp points. Store the divider closed or capped, and be mindful of where the trailing point sits when you're not actively marking.
