Applying a Top Finish or Sealant
Seal dyed or bare leather with an acrylic top finish to add water resistance and protect the color underneath.

A top finish is the last layer applied over dyed or natural leather. Acrylic finishes like Resolene add water resistance, guard against fading and rub-off, and give the surface a subtle to moderate sheen. It's a simple step, but applied too thick or too fast it can look cloudy, streaky, or tacky, so a light hand and patience between coats matter more than the product itself.
What you'll need
An acrylic leather finish (Resolene is the most common, available in matte/neutral and gloss versions)
Distilled water for thinning, if needed
A wool dauber, sponge, or spray applicator
A clean, dust-free work surface
Steps
Make sure the leather is fully dry from any prior dyeing step, and buff off any dust or loose fibers before you start.
Thin the finish if needed. Straight from the bottle, Resolene can go on thick; mixing in roughly 10-15% distilled water (up to about 30% depending on your applicator and the weather) gives a thinner coat that's easier to apply evenly.
Apply the first coat in a light, even layer, working in overlapping circular or back-and-forth strokes so no area gets doubled up while another is missed.
Avoid pressing hard or reworking a spot once the finish starts to tack up β going back over a half-dry patch is what causes cloudy streaks.
Let the coat dry fully before deciding whether it needs another pass. Most finishes look slightly hazy while wet and clear up as they cure.
Apply a second thin coat only if needed for extra protection or sheen β two thin coats almost always look better than one heavy one.
π‘ Tip
If the finish comes out cloudy or streaky, it's almost always because it was applied too thick, in an area that's too humid, or over leather that wasn't fully dry from dyeing. Thin, patient coats fix nearly every finish problem.
