Snap fasteners are a strong, reusable closure used on wallets, bags, and straps. A standard four-piece snap has a cap and socket on one side of the closure, and a stud and eyelet on the other; each pair is set into the leather separately, and the whole assembly is picked based on the "line" size (Line 24 being a common medium-duty size) matched to the weight of leather being fastened.
What you'll need
A four-piece snap fastener set, sized appropriately (Line 24 is a common general-purpose size)
A snap setter tool and matching base/anvil, sized to the snap
A rotary or drive hole punch
A mallet
A hard, flat setting surface
Steps
Mark and punch a hole at each snap location, sized to fit the post of the cap or stud snugly.
Set the socket side first. Push the cap's post through the hole from the finished (grain) side, then slip the socket over the post from the back.
Rest the assembly cap-down in the concave anvil, place the setter tool against the socket, and strike firmly with the mallet until the socket flares and locks against the cap.
Repeat on the second piece with the stud and eyelet, following the same sequence — stud through the hole from the front, eyelet over the post from the back, set on the anvil.
Test the closure by snapping the two halves together; they should click firmly shut and require a deliberate pull to release, not fall open on their own.
💡 Tip
Double-check which piece (cap/socket vs. stud/eyelet) goes on which side of your project before punching any holes — snap hardware is much harder to remove and reset cleanly than to plan correctly the first time.
